According to the Farsnews, Iranian news agency, the Iranian President, Hassan Rouhani, commented that Iran is the ‘guardian of security in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz’, adding that the regional issues will be solved through discussions amongst neighbors.
In the meantime, concerning the tensions that take place in the Persian Gulf, Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Zarif commented on Iran seizing the British vessel that
Iran took measures against a ship in the Strait of Hormuz to implement international law, not in retaliation to actions by Britain.
However, many believe that Iran seized the Stena Impero, two weeks after Britain captured Iranian tanker Grace 1, making look as if it was an act of retaliation.
Moving on, Iran’s President focused on the relations between Iran and Iraq, noting that it is of a great importance for both countries to exchange interests and knowledge. He highlighted that both countries should boost their relations and cooperation, noting that stability and regional cooperation are amongst Iran’s top priorities.
In absence of sufficient and lasting stability and security in the region, the development of cooperation between Tehran and Baghdad will surely enhance the security and stability of the region.
He continued that both countries should develop, also, in different fields such as railways, formation of joint border areas, energy, specially oil and electricity, and the development of joint ventures and the protection.
