The EU’s Fit for 55 climate package provides an opportunity to tackle black carbon emissions from ships and deliver the EU’s Arctic Communication commitment to lower the carbon and environmental footprint of maritime transport, says Clean Arctic Alliance.
According to the organization, the Communication promises faster and more ambitious emission reductions for Arctic shipping and zero pollution of shipping in the Arctic, with the Clean Arctic Alliance publishing an infographic describing what needs to be included in the EU’s Fit for 55 package for this to happen.
How to reduce black carbon emissions?
- Switching to distillate / diesel fuel will reduce black carbon emissions from heavy fuel oil fuelled ships in the Arctic by around 44%.
- Installing a diesel particulate filter will further reduce BC emissions by over 90%.
- A switch to distillate/diesel can be implemented “overnight” and lead to rapid reduction of BC emissions impacting the Arctic. with a modest (<10%) ship fuel additional cost.
