The current International Ocean Governance framework has gaps and shortcomings that are aggravated by many challenges. There is a shared perception that we need more and better ocean governance. Specifically, the diversity and intensity of human activities, including climate change, arecausing a cumulative and profound impact on global ocean systems.
All activities and resources at sea are interconnected, including their overall impact on marine ecosystems and coastal communities. This complexity is not sufficiently considered under the sectorial approaches used, causing a lack of efficiency and poor coordination.
The EU is determined to contribute with political leadership and scientific knowledge, international cooperation, and funding instruments towards more sustainable and effective international ocean governance, following the same principles at home and abroad.
Having set out an agenda for a better ocean governance, the EU further issues two infographics depicting why the multilateral framework for ocean governance needs updating.
