India has put hold on the order that suspended Anglo Eastern Ship Management’s license for 3 years that was issued due to Sanjay Chaudhary’s death which happened on April 17th, 2018.
Sanjay Chaudhary was the Chief Engineer on the Hong Kong-flagged ship MT Atlantic Ol. His death occurred while the ship, managed by Anglo Eastern, was travelling to Cape Verde Islands from Malta.
According to the Economic Times of India, the suspension order, effective from June 1st 2023, was issued by the Seamen’s Employment Office, which is part of the Directorate General. Anglo Eastern was to be suspended for three years by India’s maritime authority for breaking seafarer recruitment and placement service standards.
As a response, India’s leading maritime union, All India Seafarers and General Workers Union released a statement that condemned the DG Shipping order against Anglo-Eastern Ship Management India.
On June 5th, Anglo-Eastern shared on a LinkedIn post that following a detailed review by the Principal Officer of the Mercantile Marine Department, Mumbai, the RPS License suspension matter has been put on hold.
It thus remains and continues to be business as usual for our Indian crewing division, with no disruption to our day-to-day operations, employment of Indian seafarers, or their joining schedules.
… stated Anglo-Eastern
Anglo-Eastern also thanked the more than 12,000 seafarers who pledged their support by signing the petition initiated by National Union of Seafarers of India (NUSI), and to the many others who voiced their support on social media.
