Enhancing maritime security
Indian Government has asked all major ports to install advanced radiation detection equipment in a bid to prevent ports from hazardous materials and enhance security measures.
The equipmet includes the following: a portal monitor for personal baggage, a nuclear material detection system for check-in baggages and a vehicle monitoring system. The advanced equipment has been scheduled to be installed soon. Until now, containers were forced to be sent to Sri Lanka and Singapore for scan detection of haardous materials.
India at present has 12 Major ports Kolkata-Halida, Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Ennore, Chennai, V O Chidambaranar (formerly Tuticorin), Cochin, New Mangalore, Mormugao, Mumbai, Jawaharlal Nehru and Kandla.
