Amid the COVID-19 crisis, India’s 12 major ports marked a 21% drop in their cargo volumes, at 47.42 million tonnes (MT) during April 2020, as Indian Ports Association (IPA) reported.
Following the coronavirus pandemic, ports such as the JNPT, Chennai, Cochin and Kamrajar noted a huge decline in their cargo volume.
For the records, India has 12 major ports under the control of the Centre – Deendayal (erstwhile Kandla); Mumbai, JNPT; Mormugao, New Mangalore; Cochin, Chennai, Kamarajar (earlier Ennore), V O Chidambarnar, Visakhapatnam, Paradip and Kolkata (including Haldia) that handled 705 million tonnes (MT) cargo in the last fiscal.
Specifically, the above ports managed to handle 47.42 MT cargo during April, a 21.08% drop in comparison to the same month of 2019.
What is more, Chennai Port reported a 38.17% fall in its cargo handling to 2.44 MT, while JNPT declined by 33.97% to 3.95 MT in April.
Concluding, Cochin port slipped 33.73% to 1.87 million tonnes, and Kamrajar Port fell 30.03% to 2.08 MT.
