A major firefighting and rescue operation is ongoing after a fire broke out on 9 June aboard the Singapore-flagged container vessel MV Wan Hai 503, approximately 130 nautical miles northwest of Kochi, India.
The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) has deployed multiple ships to combat the blaze, conduct boundary cooling, and aid in search and rescue efforts. Salvage teams are also being mobilized from Kochi. So far, 18 crew members have been rescued, while four remain missing, with search operations continuing.
The fire, originating mid-ship and extending to the container bay ahead of the accommodation block, remains active, though the forward bay blaze is now under control. The vessel is emitting dense smoke, raising concerns about secondary explosions, and is listing 10–15° to port, with more containers reported lost overboard.

Efforts are focused on stabilizing the vessel, locating missing crew, and minimizing environmental impact. Further updates are expected.
