Indian shipping Minister Mansukh Mandaviya informed that the country aspires to begin the navigation in inland waterways and passenger transportation in the rivers in the North Eastern states of India.
The company Water and Power Consultancy Services Limited (WAPCOS) is now preparing a model Detailed Project Report (DPR), in order to operate low-cost ferry services in the inland waterways in these states, sources reported.

What is more, the Indian Shipping Ministry explained that this model can be implemented quickly by the Inland Waterways Authority of India, in cooperation with different state governments in the area.
Ms. Mandaviya added that inland waterways transport can play a crucial role for the North Eastern states, because of the fact that land routes there are often long, and time consuming due to the challenging ground.
Moreover, in addition to leading to easier movement, the waterways projects will also assist in providing employment locally.
