India has launched an indigenous project called ‘SWAYAT’ to develop the country’s first autonomous vessel, advancing its maritime technology capabilities.
Led by the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) in collaboration with Cochin Shipyard Ltd. (CSL), this project aligns with the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (Self-Reliant India) mission. The initiative highlights India’s commitment to creating cutting-edge maritime technologies through domestic innovation.
Constructed at CSL’s state-owned facilities, ‘SWAYAT’ is supported by Indian partners like KPIT and other manufacturers specializing in autonomous systems. These collaborations focus on integrating advanced technologies, including an indigenously developed navigation and communication suite, which will undergo certification by IRS.
As a full member of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS), IRS will ensure compliance with stringent safety standards, including its guidelines on autonomous and remotely operated vessels. Key considerations include cybersecurity measures, underscoring the project’s emphasis on innovation and safety.
This pioneering effort is set to boost India’s expertise in autonomous vessel design and certification, marking a milestone in the global maritime industry.
