The number of Indian seafarers that are working on Indian and foreign-flagged ships has surpassed 150,000 for the first time, with 37,259 getting employment during the last three years, India’s maritime administration, the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS), informed.
Namely, India had 154,349 seafarers on merchant ships at the end of 2017, an increase from 143,940 in 2016, 126,945 in 2015 and 117,090 in 2014.

Of these, 71,177 are officers, 83,172 are ratings or general-purpose staff, who amount for 97,937 jobs on the nautical side, while 56,412 are on the engineering side, local media reports.
India has about 134 maritime training institutes, with 81 conducting pre-sea training courses for trainee officers and cadets, while 53 are post-sea training institutes, offerring programmes for full-fledged officers in both nautical and engineering streams.
