Pakistani seafarers have been barred from disembarking their VLCC in India, highlighting rising tensions between the two countries.
According to Indian media, security was heightened at the port of Paradip in the eastern state of Odisha on 14 May following the arrival of the 298,100-dwt Siren II. The vessel consists of 21 Pakistani nationals, two Indians, and two Thais.
Immigration officials flagged the presence of the Pakistani crew members, who were subsequently prohibited from going ashore.
“Specific instructions were issued for the Pakistani nationals not to disembark as a precautionary measure” a security source said to the Times of India. There were no such restrictions placed on the vessel’s other four crew members.
To remind, India has banned the transit of goods from and to Pakistan amidst escalating military tensions, with both countries placing also port restrictions causing disruptions in trade. Gard’s correspondents, AIV Private Limited, have advised precaution and to not change crew at this point as it may raise certain concern. It is anticipated that crews shore leave would not be allowed and they would be asked to stay on ship only.
