India and Myanmar signed an MoU to appoint a private operator of the Sittwe Port. This aims to enhance connectivity and create job opportunities, while the two counties discussed issues of common interest, such as the development of the Rakhine state.
India’s Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale called Myanmar’s State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and discussed issues regarding bilateral cooperation, alongside topics of common interest, such as ways to develop the Rakhine state.
Mr. Gokhale also discussed with Union Minister of Transport and Communications U Thant Sin Maung about connectivity and transport infrastructure that India is establishing in Myanmar.
After that, Foreign Secretary Gokhale and U Win Khant, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transport and Communications, signed the MoU which appointed a private Port Operator for the operation and maintenance of Sittwe Port, Paletwa Inland Water Terminal and relevant facilities that are part of the Kaladan Multi Model Transit Transport Project.
The Sittwe port is planned to connect India’s north-east region to the Bay of Bengal through Mizoram, while also being an alternate route to Kolkata.
