Vizhinjam International Seaport Limited (VISL) was officially inaugurated on 2 May, marking India’s first deep-water transshipment hub and positioning the country for expanded trade across Asia.
The port, designed to boost India’s logistics efficiency and reduce reliance on foreign transshipment hubs, features a natural sea depth of 24 meters allowing ultra-large container ships (ULCS) to dock without extensive dredging.
Furthermore, the Vizhinjam International Seaport is also India’s first eco-friendly, semi-automated seaport, equipped with AI-powered vessel traffic management, remotely operated ship-to-shore cranes, and automated yard cranes for faster, safer cargo handling.
In addition, it is the first Indian port to feature an all-women team operating its automated crane systems, trained at the Community Skill Park in Vizhinjam, Kerala.
As stated, with environmental clearance granted for phases two and three in March 2025, the port’s capacity is projected to triple from 1 million to 3 million TEUs annually by 2028.
