The Indian Directorate of Shipping issued an update concerning the single-use of plastics prohibition, after receiving several representations asking for further advice on the implementation schedule.
Specifically, the Directorate received a number of representations seeking a revision of the implementation schedule concerning the rule that bans single-use plastics onboard ships in Indian waters.
The ones seeking additional information are the cruise liners, who have requested a longer time for implementation.
Consequently, the Directorate is under discussions with shipping companies and cruise liners to implement a revised implementation schedule.
According to the Directorate
- All ships including Cruise liners are permitted to operate on Indian waters till a revised implementation schedule is finalized and an “Addendum for the DGS Order 05 of 2019” in this respect is issued.
- All ships are also permitted to avail reception facilities for all waste including single use plastics at all Indian ports. This is issued with the approval of the Director General of Shipping, Government of India.
