IMO launched a video ahead of the Day of the Seafarer 2022, which will take place on 25 June, aiming to focus the public attention on the contributions made by seafarers to the entire global community.
According to IMO Secretary-General, Kitack Lim, “this year the theme celebrates maritime voyages and journeys. Every day hundreds of thousands of seafarers are underway on ships while others take their well-deserved break getting ready for their next voyage.”
Ships are key mover of global trade and engine of the global economy transporting cargoes, such as food medicine electronics and more without the seafarers there would be no shipping

As Mr. Lim added, this day gives a chance to recognize and pay tribute to seafarers everywhere, whatever their voyage shipping.
This is a meaningful important career that provides a solid foundation for life and offer endless opportunities to learn and progress this noble profession
For 2022, the campaign of the Day of the Seafarers, with the theme ‘Your voyage – then and now, share your journey’, look at seafarer voyages, what it includes and how has it evolved over time and what remains at the heart of seafarers’ reality.
#SeafarerJourney will be the new hashtag for the 2022 campaign. This hashtag can be used by anyone engaging in the campaign to pay tribute to seafarers. Seafarers themselves can use it to showcase their voyages. All IMO’s social media platforms are featured but Twitter, Facebook and Instagram account for most activity.
It’s just lip service, we need something solid on the ground to feel they mean it. Even basic internet on board is charged by shipowners as a very basic example.
