As the Taiwanese Minister of Transportation and Communications Wang Kwo-tsai said on Monday, two of the country’s shipping companies have reduced their carbon emissions by 40%.
According to Taipei Times, Wang Kwo-tsai claimed that Yang Ming and Evergreen Marine have reached the IMO 2030 target at a side event on green marine transport at the 11th APEC Transportation Ministerial Meeting in Detroit, Michigan.
Taiwanese maritime companies intend to buy 33 dual-fuel eco-friendly ships and 46 low-carbon ships, as well as boost the share of shore power used by their fleets, according to the Minister.
Furthermore, he reminded that Yang Ming and Wan Hai have joined the Silk Alliance, which was established by the Lloyd’s Register Maritime Decarbonisation Hub to construct a “Green Corridor Cluster” beginning with intra-Asian container traffic.
Wang Kwo-tsai also discussed the “Green Maritime Corridor” and electric vehicles with US Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, as well as with transportation officials from Chile, Indonesia, New Zealand, the Philippines, and Thailand, according to Taipei Times.
