The Republic of the Marshall Islands reminds that IMO has pushed back the compliance date for ensuring Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) communication capability.
Therefore by the first safety radio survey after 01 January 2024, equipment must be updated as follows:
- High Frequency (HF) radiocommunication equipment capable of operating Narrow Band Direct Printing (NBDP) must meet the new channeling arrangements, contained in the 2012 Radio Regulations, HF, Appendix 17, Part B, Sections II and III,
- Medium Frequency (MF) radiocommunication equipment capable of operating NBDP as well as Very High Frequency (VHF) equipment, without prejudice to the arrangements contained in appendix 18 of the Radio Regulations, must be updated so that it meets the arrangements which will be in force following the World Radiocommunication Conference 2019 (WRC-19).
While most existing equipment should already be in compliance with these requirements by 01 January 2024, equipment that is unable to comply with the Radio Regulations will need to be replaced, and the newly installed equipment should meet the performance standards outlined in IMO Circular MSC.1/Circ.1460/Rev.2.
