Standard Club and Sailors’ Society’s Wellness at Sea issued ten tips focusing on how to deal with the mental health impacts onboard amid the pandemic.
As explained, working at sea, especially amid a pandemic, exposes seafarers to a number of factors that can push them towards mental health problems.
Therefore, it is important to be aware of these and know there are options available should seafarers need to speak to a mental champion onboard or a professional organisation for emotional support.
In light of the above, Standard Club and Sailors’ Society released the following tips on how seafarers can cope with the mental health impact in these difficult circumstances:
- Challenge your self talk
- Plan worry time
- Keep in mind that misinformation catapults anxiety. Seek information from reliable sources.
- Take a social media holiday
- Strike up a conversation
- Practice slow breathing
- Muscle relaxation exercises
- Keep in mind that you are more than your emotions
- Try to eat healthy and make time to exercise
- Be kind to yourself
