A Liberia-flagged tanker, the Olympic Spirit, was attacked twice by missiles and drones in the Red Sea on the morning of 10 October, in an assault claimed by Houthis, Reuters reports.
The incident occurred approximately 73 nautical miles (135 kilometers) southwest of Hodeidah, Yemen, while the tanker was en route from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to Muscat, Oman. The initial strike hit the starboard side of the vessel, damaging the bridge, but the captain reported no fires or casualties onboard.
After the first strike, two additional projectiles detonated nearby, but maritime security sources confirmed that the damage was minor, and the vessel remained seaworthy. The crew members were safe, and the Olympic Spirit continued its journey to the next port of call.
According to Reuters, in a statement, the Houthi movement claimed responsibility for targeting the Olympic Spirit with 11 ballistic missiles and two drones, also stating they had attacked another vessel, identified as the St. John, in the Indian Ocean as part of broader attacks on global shipping in response to Israel’s ongoing conflict in Gaza.
