Company Recognized for Environmental Excellence and for Sustainability Practices
Horizon Lines, Inc. (OTCQB: HRZL), one of the nation’s leading domestic ocean shipping companies, has received honors for environmental stewardship from the Chamber of Shipping of America (CSA) and from Supply & Demand Chain Executive magazine.
Horizon Lines was recognized for outstanding achievement in environmental excellence by the CSA at a recent ceremony in Washington, D.C. Additionally, the company has been named one of the 2012 Green Supply Chain Award winners by Supply & Demand Chain Executive magazine in its December issue.
“Environmental stewardship is critically important to our culture, planning, operations and success at Horizon Lines,” said Andrew Phillips, Environmental Compliance Director. “We are honored to be recognized for taking a leadership role in helping to ensure environmentally sustainable business practices for our customers’ supply chains.”
CSA awarded eight Horizon Lines vessels with Environmental Achievement Awards, which recognize vessels that have operated without environmental incidents for at least two years. The eight Horizon Lines vessels have operated a combined 64 years without an environmental incident. The certificates were presented to the Horizon Challenger (9 years), Horizon Discovery (7 years), Horizon Kodiak (11 years), Horizon Navigator (2 years), Horizon Pacific (12 years), Horizon Producer (9 years), Horizon Reliance (11 years), and Horizon Trader (3 years). The award certificates were presented to Captain Timothy Close, USCG (ret.), who is the company’s Director of Safety, Security & Environmental Health.
The CSA represents 38 U.S. based companies that own, operate or charter oceangoing tank, container, or dry bulk vessels engaged in both the domestic and international trades. “These awards celebrate the dedication to environmental excellence of our seafarers and the company personnel shore-side who operate our vessels to the highest standards,” said Joseph J. Cox, President of CSA. “In today’s world, it seems our industry only gets front-page news when spills or other environmental problems occur. It is encouraging to see how many vessels go for years achieving environmental excellence. It should be clear to the American public that we in the maritime industry take our stewardship of the marine environment very seriously.”
In addition, Horizon Lines has been recognized for environmental stewardship with a 2012 Green Supply Chain Award from Supply & Demand Chain Executive magazine. This year’s fifth annual awards honor companies that leverage green practices and solutions to further drive sustainable improvements in their supply chain. Award winners were selected based on companies’ goals, strategy and execution to achieve current and projected sustainability results.
Horizon Lines’ sustainability efforts have resulted in an estimated emissions reduction of 231,000 tons of CO2 over the past six years through the company’s fuel conservation and emissions program.
