The Hong Kong Marine Department informs that the Government has proposed updates for shipowners’ liability limits concerning maritime incidents in order to align with IMO’s requirements.
In particular, Hong Kong aims to amend Schedule 2 to the Merchant Shipping (Limitation of Shipowners Liability) Ordinance (Cap. 434) to incorporate the latest liability limits adopted by IMO in the Convention on Limitation of Liability for Maritime Claims into local legislation.
The Legislative Council Panel on Economic Development and relevant advisory and consultative committees of the Marine Department have been consulted. Also, members are supporting these legislative proposals.
The proposed legislative amendments were gazetted on October 6 and will be tabled at the Legislative Council on October 11 for negative vetting.
