On March 3, 2015, HHIC’s (HANJIN Heavy Industries & Construction) Yeongdo Shipyard announced that it signed an agreement to build two LPG/ammonia carriers (38,000㎥) with a Southeast Asian ship owner.
As a state-of-the-art vessel (180m in length, 29m in width, 18m in height) which significantly improved fuel efficiency with energy-saving design and resistance-minimizing propellers, it can carry ammonia as well as LPG. In particular, this eco-ship minimizes the production of hazardous gases with the environment-friendly G-type engine.
Thanks to this successful bid, HHIC’s Yeongdo Shipyard was able to diversify vessel lines, which has been promoted to enhance its competitiveness. It appears that the company has gained a footing to win the bid for similar vessels such as LNG carriers.
In fact, HHIC-Phil’s Subic Shipyard already signed a contract to build the same vessels (8 vessels in total) in 2013. Last year, it even won the bid to build LNG bunker vessels for the first time in the world.
An official from HHIC’s Yeongdo Shipyard said, “Thanks to the recent popularity of shale gas in North America, LPG production has dramatically increased.” He continued, “Because of the expansion of consumption and increase in order quantity for LPG carriers among emerging countries, further orders are expected to follow.”
Due to this successful bid, HHIC’s Yeongdo Shipyard has booked enough advance orders for three years of production until the first half of 2017.
According to the industry report, it is likely that HHIC would further accelerate the normalization of management. In particular, the recent successful bids such as the second ship of the Dokdo-class landing platform helicopter ship (LPH) last year would greatly improve the company’s reputation.”
An official from the HHIC said, “We are going to establish a high-efficiency global production system with a two-track strategy which means that Subic Shipyard specializes in the production of large vessels and offshore plants while Yeongdo Dockyard focuses on mid-size and special-purpose vessels”.
