A cargo ship drifted on a beach in southern Israel on Thursday, January 2, due to the heavy winds and stormy conditions that forced the vessel away from its anchor point near the port of Ashdod, Israel.
According to Reuters, the vessel called “Zelek Star” was transmitting cement and additional products from Greece to Israel when it swept away and drifted onto Oranim Beach.
The beach is popular amogst locals and tourists, as from photos that were published, people were walking at the beach with the vessel in the background.
Captain, Yigal Maor, manager of Israel’s Shipping and Ports Authority, reported that the vessel had 12 crewonboard at the time of the incident which was not responsible for coping with the condition. On the contrary, he states that the owners of the vessel were the ones responsible for the safety of the crew and the ship, as well.
