Haiti’s Acting Prime Minister Claude Joseph called the US and the UN to send help in order to secure Haiti’s sea, air and oil ports.
This call came after the assassination last week of President Jovenel Moïse. As Mr. Joseph to The Associated Press, the country needs assistance and they asked their international partners for help.
Responding to the pledge, the US sent a delegation of FBI and Department of Homeland Security officials to Haiti to help with the investigation into the President’s murder, as well as assess the security situation in the country. Currently, there are no plans to provide military assistance.
Following the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse on 7 July 2021, all port operations in Haiti have stopped. The interim government declared a state of siege in effect throughout the country until at least July 22.
Moreover, the Port Authority has not issued any official communication, but it is reported that vessels are being ordered to leave without a pilot on board, as pilots are unable to reach the ports.
According to the New York Times, Jovenel Moïse was killed in an attack on his private residence on the outskirts of the capital, Port-au-Prince. The authorities said late Wednesday that they had intercepted “suspected assassins.”
