Grimaldi’s ro-ro cargo ship ‘Grande Amburgo’ ran aground on Wstern Scheldt bank at Walsoorden, the Netherlands, on Sunday, May 26. The vessel was sailing from Dakar Senegal to Antwerp.
According to sources, Grande Amburgo was able to come off about an hour later on its own.
After its coming off, it was taken to Hansweert on the opposite side of the river and anchored. After survey, she resumed voyage and was berthed at Antwerp at around 0230 UTC May 27. No damages reported.
This incident follows Grimaldi’s decision on implementing stricter controls on cargo sea transport, keeping in mind the company’s Grande America who eventually sank after being on fire; Specifically, the ‘Grande America’ con/ro caught fire on March 10.
Also, this decision follows Grimaldi’s Grande Europa vessel that caught fire off Mallorca, Spain on May 15.
Concluding, Grande Amburgo, Italian-flagged ro-ro was built in 2003, and is owned by Grimaldi.
