On 25th January, whilst in Accra to train Welfare Responders, the MPHRP team were delighted to meet the 4 Ghanaian seafarers, and their families, who were held hostage for 1000 days on the Iceberg 1 – they were released in December 2012.
Seafarers are left impoverished after piracy if abandoned by their employers. The Maritime Piracy Humanitarian Response Fund (MPHRF) supports destitute seafarers and families in dire need of assistance for medical care, missed rental payments and school fees. The Fund helped us to assist these Ghanaian seafarers and their families, none of whom have yet been able to secure new contracts.
To contribute to the Fund visit the MPHRF section for more information. All proceeds of the Fund go to seafarers and families.
