Independent advice in relation to the marine environment
IMO is joining its partner UN agencies for the Joint Group of Experts on the Scientific Aspects of Marine Environmental Protection (GESAMP) 41st session (1 to 4 September) at World Maritime University in Malmö, Sweden.
GESAMP provides independent advice on current and emerging issues in relation to the marine environment. The Group was founded in 1969, and is currently sponsored by nine UN organizations IMO, IAEA, FAO, UNDP, UNESCO-IOC, UNEP, UNIDO, WMO and the UN.
Items on the agenda include:
- evaluation of hazards of harmful substances carried by ships;
- review of applications for “active substances‟ in ballast water management systems;
- scientific review of mercury and its compounds and threats to the marine environment;
- trends in global pollution in coastal environments;
- global assessment of micro-plastics in the environment.
An open seminar on “Maritime activities and noise: Sources and Impacts” will be live-streamed on 3 September.
