Innogy and RWE Supply & Trading inked a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Deutsche Bahn (German Rail – DB) for the supply of electricity from the Nordsee Ost offshore wind farm. The project will commence in 2024 and will run for five years.
The contract represents the first offshore wind Corporate PPA in Germany.
The supplied volume comprises 25 megawatts, which equals to four wind turbines. That is eight% of the total production of the wind farm, which consists of 48 turbines with a total of 295 megawatts.
Hans Bünting, COO Renewables innogy SE commented that from 2024 Deutsche Bahn will operate climate-friendly trains with green electricity from their Nordsee Ost offshore wind farm.
Moreover, Deutsche Bahn covers 57% of its energy requirements with energy from renewables and aspires to have its entire rail system run on renewable energy by 2038.
Torsten Schein, CEO of DB Energie commented
Over the next few years, we will consistently replace expiring contracts based on fossil-fuel generation with renewable energy. Before the end of September, we will start a further Europe-wide invitation to tender for the long-term purchase of green electricity.
The power is produced at the offshore wind farm for a fixed price and is used directly by Deutsche Bahn, and RWE Supply & Trading acts as the contract and retail partner.
Concluding, Germany aspires to increase its offshore wind capacity to 20 gigawatts by 2030, according to a law the German Government passed in December.
