Genting Hong Kong, cruise operator, informed that it will buy scrubbers as a measure to comply with the upcoming IMO 2020 sulphur cap. Specifically, the company will retrofit three of its ships with exhaust gas cleaning systems.
Genting Hong Kong will add scrubbers to three ships and LTH-Baas will do the retrofits, as the cruise operator paid the company EUR 69.1 million (USD 79.4 million).
The agreement was signed in September 2018, and says that LTH-Baas will be responsible for turnkey integration of the scrubbers. The works are expected to be done by 2020.
In addition to this agreement, Genting Hong Kong signed another agreement worth of EUR 7.7 with UMOS, according to which the latter will provide support services for the scrubbers installation.
Until now, Maersk will add scrubbers to some of its ships, with DFDS also installing scrubbers on 12 freight ferries on routes in the Mediterranean. Another company that chose scrubbers is Safe Bulkers. Maran Tankers will also install scrubbers on 13 vessels until 2020. Furthermore, Golden Ocean Group will install scrubbers on 16 Capesize vessels with options for 9 more, while Eagle Bulk Shipping will purchase up to 37 scrubbers. Recently, Newport Shipping has bought 100 scrubbers with options for 100 more.
