Summit LNG announced it will send its damaged Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) for repairs after suffering damage in Bangladesh.
The FSRU, which functions as a floating LNG import terminal, suffered significant damage when Cyclone Remal hit Bangladesh in late May. A stray steel pontoon, weighing several hundred tons, struck the vessel, shearing its outer hull about a meter below the waterline and causing water ingress into its ballast tanks. Before heading for repairs, the FSRU will first discharge its LNG cargo.
Summit LNG hopes the FSRU will return to Bangladesh within three weeks post-repair. According to various sources, the outage of the FSRU has notably reduced the country’s total LNG send-out capacity. This reduction may lead to a decrease in LNG imports by up to four cargoes in June.
Despite a partial recovery in gas-fired electricity generation following the incident, power output remains below pre-outage levels, local sources report. To mitigate the impact, Bangladesh is expected to rely on coal and oil-fired power generation.
