A Great Lakes freighter caught fire while docked for winter at Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding, on January 1st. No injuries were reported.
The fire was reported board the MV Roger Blough, that was spending its winter layover at Bay Ship. Attempts to make sure the fire was contained continued until the afternoon.
The damage was limited to the ship itself, while it is unknown if anyone was aboard when the fire happened. If someone was onboard, it would be essential crew members for the layover or maintenance personnel.
The cause is not yet known but an investigation is taking place.
The ship had also ran aground with a load of cargo on a reef in Lake Superior’s Whitefish Bay on May 27, 2016. It started offloading cargo June 3 and came free of the reef a day later.
