Supporting flag and port states in west and central Africa
The first event in the IMO/EU/ACP (African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States) project to support flag and port states in west and central Africa (Flag-Port WACAF) is underway in Lagos, Nigeria (21 – 30 July).
The European Union is funding a 1.2 million grant contract, signed between IMO and the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States (ACP) to support training and capacity-building activities aimed at enhancing flag State implementation and port State control in Western and Central Africa, with a view to upgrading the region’s maritime administrations and preparing its States for the mandatory IMO audit scheme.
The combined training and needs-assessment activity on flag State implementation, port State control and maritime legislation is designed to help Nigeria prepare for the IMO audit scheme among other capacity building objectives.
Mrs Mfon Ekong-Usoro, Sec-Gen-Abuja MoU and partner in the Project, delivered the key note address while Captain Dallas Laryea, IMO’s Regional Coordinator, read IMO-Sec-Gen’s goodwill message.
