Five missing after collision in the Black Sea
The Dutch chemical tanker “Alessandro DP” and the Sierra Leonian-flagged “Karim I” were involved in a collision on Monday afternoon in the Black Sea off the Bulgarian coast, according to the Dutch news site nu.nl.
The accident happened about 20 km southeast of Cape Emine, a waiting area for ships intending to enter the port of Burgas.
One site reports that thetanker sustained no damage, while the “Karim I” sank almost immediately. Five crew members – four Syrians and one Egyptian – remain missing.
According to the news report, preliminary information from the port authorities suggest that the “Karim I” may have committed a maneuvering error.
The Director of the Maritime Administration of Bourgas, Zivko Petrov said that the water temperature in the region is of about 15 degrees, which, in his opinion, gives hope for the survival of seafarers.
