Five people were injured after the tourist boat ‘Boramar’ burst into flame, following collision with another vessel off the island of Toxa, in northwest Spain, Tuesday.
The catamaran was carrying 48 passengers and four crew members at the time of the incident. Many passengers threw themselves into the water to escape fire, while the Spanish Civil Guard and individual boats headed to the scene, local media reported.
According to a Twitter statement by local authorities, two people reported serious burns and were airlifted to the hospital. A further three people received treatment for minor injuries. There were no fatalities.
Firefighting efforts are underway. The cause of the fire is yet to be revealed, but eyewitnesses say flames originated from the kitchen.
When the incident occurred, the boat was traveling between the Galician coast and Toxa, north of Vigo, on a sightseeing trip.
On the aftermath, Mayor of Grove, José Antonio Cacabelos, said that security measures must be implemented to prevent similar accidents in the future.
