The Norway’s Accident Investigation Board issued a research focusing on the sinking fishing vessel “Fay”. Specifically, the vessel sank on 28 December north-east of Honningsvåg, Barents Sea with the certain causes of the incident still remain unclear.
All of the 12 personnel that were onboard were rescued and transported safely by the “Sea King” helicopter which brought them to land.
The Chief Rescue Center Northern Norway, Nordkapp Municipality along with volunteers in Nordkapp and all vessels who where sailing close to the area teamed up and helped to the rescue operation.
The investigation of marine accident northeast of Honningsvåg showed that the fishing vessel lost auxiliary generator power. Without the power of the vessel’s hydraulics, the personnel could not secure a leaking hatch and the ship begun flooded.
Although the researchers claim that they have not come to any conclusion with the reasons of the casualty still remain unknown, as there is a lot of work to be done in order to examine every factor.
For the records, the 20.99 meter long fishing vessel was built back in 2018 and considered to be the biggest fishing boat yet to fit into the 21-meter length category in Norway’s quota system.
Overall sinking vessels is a common seen phenomenon when at sea and can lead to fatal injuries. The USCG published its report several months ago recommending how to prevent such accidents onboard.
