Strategic partnership between Onboard-Napa and Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering
The strategic partnership between Onboard-Napa and Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME), the NAPA-DSME Power software, has produced its first order, just one month into its existence.
The system is part of DSME’s green ships concept and uses Onboard Napa programs to help plan, optimise and record voyage data, and analyse the voyage to increase efficiency. The first installations will be on six tanker newbuildings for Russian operator Sovcomflot; there is an option for an additional six vessels. Delivery of the first ship, to be operated by Novoship, is scheduled for 2012.
DSME director of design Odin Kwon said at Nor-Shipping that DSME-Power is becoming an integral part of DSME’s Green Ship concept, and will allow the yard’s customers to adopt a solution that already covers the present recommendations as well as anticipated future regulatory requirements for energy-efficient ship operations- something which DSME and Napa claim that no other software package on the market can accomplish.
Napa points out that Novoship can expect to achieve reductions in emissions, operational costs, and fuel consumption. Prior use of the software package has indicated the annual savings potential on fuel costs alone to be about 3%-5%.
In the case of a single VLCC this would equate to about $250,000 to $ 400,000 per annum depending on, for example, the number of operating days and propulsion power. In the above example the decreased fuel consumption should also directly result in CO2 emission reductions corresponding to 1,200 to 2,000 tons.
