The 13,092-TEU containership COSCO HOPE collided with gantry crane boom while leaving eastern Port Said container terminal around midnight on May 2. Local media reports that a fire broke out causing damage to twenty containers, at least two people were injured.
After the collision, the mega contairship left the port and was anchored on Port Said anchorage without any significant damage. Fire was reported to become under control with the assistance of fire engines and canal tugs in firefighting at the scence.
Although it is not clear how the fire started, sources indicated that one of the damaged containers was loaded with inflammable chemicals.
It was also reported that due to electrical safety issues, the operations at Egypt’s Port of Said SCCT terminal were halted after the crash.
