The ships Cruise Roma and Cruise Barcelona, from the Grimaldi Group, which cover the Barcelona-Porto Torres-Civitavecchia line, have started a process of lengthening and total rehabilitation. This has as a goal to achieve greater cargo capacity, while they also aim to reduce their emissions and become zero emission ships during their stay in port.
The work to retrofit the vessels have already begun, as Cruise Roma is the shipyards in Palermo. The ferries will have scrubbers to reduce their emissions during the voyages, as well as a battery system that will store electricity during navigation and will supply it to the ship when it is docked at the port. This system is based on large lithium batteries and is used for the first time in a ferry of these characteristics.

Moreover, the hulls of the ships will be lengthened with a new cross section of 29 meters with which they will have a length of 254 meters. Once the works are done, the vessels will have a gross tonnage of 63,000 tons and will be featuring a capacity for 3,500 passengers, 3,700 linear meters for trucks and coaches and 3,000 m2 of vehicle cover.
What is more, a complete modernization of the ships’ interiors and services will also take place. New public spaces designed to enable the stay of passengers during the voyage, spaces for leisure, a new theme restaurant and a new self-service, in order to meet the needs of families on board will be incorporated.
