Polestar is advancing its sustainability efforts by incorporating renewable fuels in its ocean freight routes, which represent about 75% of its transportation emissions.
As production ramps up, renewable fuel will be used for around 65% of the outbound ocean freight from Asia to Belgium. This initiative will extend to North America later in the year. By utilizing B30 Biofuel, which consists of 30% Fatty Acid Methyl Esters (FAME), Polestar aims to cut emissions from these shipping routes by 20-25% compared to conventional Sulphur fuel oils.
Polestar is also decarbonizing its inter-continental inbound ocean freight for production materials and spare parts by using 100% FAME fuel, which reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 84% compared to fossil fuels. This fuel is derived from renewable sources like waste cooking oil, excluding palm oil-related feedstock.
As informed, the company has also transitioned its Vehicle Processing Centre (VPC) in Belgium to operate entirely on renewable electricity. This facility serves as a finishing and preparation hub for vehicles before they are delivered to European customers, ensuring they are charged with renewable electricity.
This is an important step in Polestar’s goal to reach climate neutrality by 2040. Becoming truly climate neutral means eliminating all greenhouse gas emissions across our operations, and all phases of our cars’ life cycles, including emissions from the supply chain.
