The European Transport Workers’ Federation (ETF) has published the Dockers and Seafarers Manifesto, to advocate for socially sustainable shipping and port sectors in Europe.
The manifesto acknowledges the significant role played by seafarers and dockers in the European economy, especially during the challenging times of the Covid-19 crisis. However, it raises concerns about the lack of socially sustainable practices, fair competition, and just transitions for maritime workers within the EU.
In terms of green maritime practices, the manifesto calls for a climate policy that integrates social sustainability as part of the just transition for shipping and port workers. It advocates for adequate funding and public investments in training programs to facilitate a green and just transition, along with the creation of a European Just Transition Observatory.
Additionally, the manifesto addresses safety concerns related to lashing operations, stressing the importance of qualified dockers performing these tasks to ensure safety and prevent accidents. It calls for harmonized EU approaches to recording accidents on board ships and investigations involving dock workers in ports.
