In the context of Angus Frew’s 5 year contract extension, until 2022, as BIMCO’s Secretary General & CEO, Mr. Frew stated that his plan is to implement a policy to enhance environmental protection.
Angus Frew seemed optimistic about the industry’s environmental efforts to date, and believes that the industry’s emissions peaked in 2008. However, zero carbon emissions are vital for operators to achieve their long-term goals.
Furthermore, Frew will have the industry’s environmental policy as a main priority for the coming years.
“The most important thing on BIMCO’s agenda is the environment. We have the implementation of the 2020 Sulphur cap to contend with, and we want a clear strategy and reduction objectives on carbon emissions. Being proactive in these environmental discussions is the only way to make sure that we, as an industry, are regulated in a way that makes practical sense,” Mr. Frew said.
As far as BIMCO is concerned, it aims is to retains a level playing field for the industry, and that practical hurdles are removed for shipowners, in order to comply with new environmental legislation.
“Right now, is a very interesting time for shipping, and I am very happy to be offered the opportunity to extend my contract. I can continue to lead the organisation that has the practical expertise and the scope to make a real difference on crucial industry issues, for example, the current environmental discussions and the establishing of a greenhouse gas strategy and objectives for the shipping industry,” Angus Frew concluded.
