EH Group has received Approval in Principle from DNV for its hydrogen fuel cell system designed for maritime use.
The 250kW hydrogen fuel cell system solution has been assessed and approved by DNV, confirming its compliance with applicable maritime rules, regulations, codes, and standards. The certification process is now moving forward for ‘Type Approval,’ which involves the complete certification of the product.
A hydrogen fuel cell system is a technology that converts chemical energy from hydrogen fuel into electrical energy through an electrochemical reaction. Fuel cell systems have been gaining significant attention in the maritime industry, in its effort to decarbonize. Hydrogen, in general, is regarded as an attractive alternative to fossil fuels. For instance, EU recently launched project spanning 42 months aimed at developing innovative hydrogen solutions with a focus on the development and testing of fuel cells specifically for marine applications.
The Founder of EH Group, Mardit Matian, highlighted that this approval underscores the company’s commitment to standards and norms and represents a significant step toward decarbonizing the maritime sector.
Danny Knippen, Certification Engineer and Project Manager at EH Group, emphasized the importance of this approval for the wider commercialization of their fuel cell system, enabling the company to scale up and meet the high-power requirements of the marine sector while offering turn-key solutions.
In addition to the recent approval, EH Group had successfully tested its fuel cell technology in high-temperature PEM mode (HTPEMFC) in October 2023. The test demonstrated the unique stack design’s capability, delivering over 2.3kW/L of power at atmospheric pressure.
