SAFETY4SEA is pleased to announce that Dr. George Gratsos, Chairman, HELMEPA received the 2018 GREEN4SEA Leadership Award at a prestigious awards ceremony which successfully concluded on March the 6th at the Yacht Club of Greece in Athens, the evening ahead of the GREEN4SEA Conference.
Dr. George Gratsos received the 2018 GREEN4SEA Leadership Award, sponsored by Arcadia Ship management, for demonstrating innovative, initiative-driven leadership by holding various positions throughout his career impacting significantly the national and international shipping industry.
Presenting the award Capt. Dimitris Mattheou, Managing Director, Arcadia Ship Management, on behalf of the sponsor, said “With great pride and honour, I am pleased to present the Leadership Award to Dr. Gratsos who as a third-generation ship-owner, a Naval Architect and a shipping-minded individual, is dedicated to the growth and vitality of our maritime community. He is a passionate about a cause, works tirelessly for the greater good and inspires others to become involved and committed to the same cause towards safer shipping and environmental sustainability.”
Accepting the award Dr. George Gratsos, Chairman, HELMEPA & Principal, Standard Bulk Transport Corp., stated: “My involvement in the public affairs of Greek shipping started in 1988. Having graduated from MIT with a degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering my main expertise was on technical matters and I joined the Technical Committees of the relevant associations I was elected to the Board of. Many unfortunate incidents at the time prompted legislative initiatives which needed to be analyzed and discussed in order to effectively deal with the problem at hand. With the signing of the Kyoto Protocol, interest moved to environmental matters, how shipping affects them and how we could do better. To do this we attempted to understand how all forms of emissions affected the environment of our habitat, and study the many and very complicated interactions involved.”
“Recently I uploaded at the academia.edu website a paper I prepared in 2017 called “Effective Decarbonization of Shipping”, which tries to analyze in about 27 pages the various environmental interactions and mitigation opportunities for shipping as I evaluate them.” Dr. Gratsos added.
Dr. George A. Gratsos is a shipowner and a senior member of a Greek shipping family established in 1902, holding a B.Sc. in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from MIT(1965) and a Ph.D on Shipping Market Dynamics by the University of the Aegean (Highest Honors). He is Chairman of HELMEPA (Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Association). Also, he is President of the Maritime Safety and Marine Environment Protection Committee of the UNION OF GREEK SHIPOWNERS (UGS), on the BoD of U.K. FREIGHT DEMURRAGE AND DEFENCE ASSOCIATION LTD (London) (the largest mutual legal cost insurer). He is also a member of many international shipping organizations and has lectured at universities in Greece and abroad.
The GREEN4SEA Leadership Award is a special category, decided upon consideration and review of a list of “Editor’s Pick” nominees by the SAFETY4SEA Team with the aim to reward any individual person that provided industry leadership and contributed towards sustainable shipping throughout his/her career. Other winners of the 2018 GREEN4SEA Awards were: V.Ships for the Dry Operator Award, Prime Marine for the Tanker Operator Award, Alfa Laval for the Technology Award, Project Forward for the Clean Shipping Award, MPA Singapore for the Port Award, Elemed Project for the Initiative Award.
