DNV has approved an AI-based autonomous navigation system by granting a design verification report (DVR), during Gastech 2023.
he system is a joint project between Avikus, a navigation specialist, and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries. Following the evaluation, the Liberian International Ship and Corporate Registry (LISCR) has also given an Approval in Principle (AiP) for this system.

The “HiNAS Control” system employs artificial intelligence (AI) and augmented reality (AR) to integrate data from different navigation tools. This technology enables ships to autonomously avoid collisions while maintaining optimal routes and speeds. According to DNV, by assisting navigators, it reduces fatigue and contributes to safer voyages, better fuel efficiency, and fewer maritime accidents and emissions.
Leveraging advanced new technologies to give seafarers and the maritime industry new tools to further improve their safety and environmental performance is key for the future of the maritime industry.

To remind, during the 2023 SMART4SEA Athens Forum, Mr. Themistoklis Sardis, IT Manager, Costamare Shipping Company S.A. explained that there are several AI applications in the shipping industry, including:

- Cargo Optimization: AI can be used to optimize cargo loading and unloading, by analyzing data on cargo weight and volume, vessel stability, and port infrastructure.
- Risk Management: AI-based risk management systems can analyze data from various sources to identify and mitigate risks in the shipping industry, such as weather, traffic and piracy.
- Supply Chain Management: AI can be used to optimize the entire shipping process, from order management, to logistics and inventory management.
