The Danish Maritime Authority advises that if you have one or more certificates that will expire on 31 December 2016, they must be replaced with so-called 2010 certificates already now.
For a period of time, the implementation of the Manila amendments to the STCW Convention has made it impossible to issue certificates with a date of expiry after 31 December 2016.
Therefore, extremely many certificates of competency and certificates of recognition need to be replaced before the turn of the year ; this creates increased activity.
DMA says if you want to be certain that your certificates are replaced before their expiry, you should get started already now. All seafarers whose certificates expire on 31 December 2016 have received a message in their so-called e-Boks (the Danish system for receipt of digital mail from the authorities and others) with guidelines on how to renew the certificates.
The new certificates will have a period of validity of 5 years from the date of issue and a fee of DKK 500 will be requested for each certificate.
Certificates of competency
No later than by 1 January 2017, all seafarers must hold certificates of competency meeting the amended provisions of the Convention. The new education and training requirements of the STCW Convention do not involve any considerable changes as regards the issue of certificates of competency applicable to merchant vessels. This is so because the Danish maritime education and training programmes already meet the new requirements to a high degree. The regulations on certificates of competency are stipulated in the order on the qualification requirements of seafarers and fishermen and on certificates of competency and certificates of proficiency.
