Denmark has officially announced its candidacy for re-election to the Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) for the 2026-2027 term in Category C.
In a statement, Denmark has expressed its commitment to continue supporting the IMO’s efforts to maintain a globally regulated, responsible, and future-ready shipping industry.
Denmark’s key priorities are:
Enhancing maritime safety
All IMO initiatives should be rooted in safety and security, addressing both existing and emerging risks. Key priorities include protecting seafarers and passengers, safeguarding the marine environment, and ensuring freedom of navigation. As new green technologies emerge, their safety and security challenges must be addressed, while cyber threats require ongoing focus to strengthen resilience in the maritime sector.
Preventing loss of containers remains a key priority to protect the marine environment and safeguard global supply chains.
Strengthening maritime governance
IMO has established a robust global legal framework that enhances collaboration among Member States and effectively addresses constantly evolving maritime challenges. Strengthening governance, transparency and enforcement should be a key focus going forward. Working towards adapting efficient, goal-oriented working methods and enforceable regulations is essential.
Ensuring the well-being and capabilities of seafarers
The future of shipping relies on the well-being and competencies of seafarers. Forward-thinking maritime education and training that attracts talent and provides skills to handle the digital and technological developments is imperative. Attracting young talents, regardless of gender or religion, hinges on the ability of leaders within the global commercial fleet to create and maintain a safe and healthy working environment.
Denmark encourages the IMO to give greater attention to the Human Factor, recognizing how focusing on seafarers’ capabilities and limitations can enhance safety, performance, and overall well-being.
Ensuring inclusivity and collaborative governance
Inclusivity among IMO Member States is essential in achieving the goals of the IMO. Only through collaboration and active participation of all Member States, regardless of geographical location, size or economic status can these goals be achieved. While doing so, the IMO should work to reduce administrative burdens and promote regional collaborations for uniform implementation of instruments.
Advancing digitalization and green shipping
Embracing digitalization across all aspects of maritime operations, starting from IMO, will streamline processes, enhance transparency, and support smarter working methods with less administrative burdens.
The IMO should also prioritize high environmental standards, focusing on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, supporting the transition to low-carbon fuels, and encouraging the adoption of renewable energy sources.
Moreover, it is essential to implement measures that reduce marine pollution, protect biodiversity, and promote circular economy principles, ensuring a more efficient, resilient, and sustainable maritime industry for future generations.
Developing inclusive strategies that empower all Member States to strengthen their digital capabilities and retrofit vessels is vital for achieving a sustainable future.
