As Reuters reports, Hungarian prosecutors are expected to charge the captain of the cruise ship that hit and sank the ‘Mermaid’ tourist vessel on the River Danube, which led to 28 people onboard losing their lives.
Namely, the collision occurred on Wednesday, May 29, in River Danube between a cruise ship and a tour boat. After the collision, the Hungarian authorities detained the 64-year-old Ukrainian man identified by police as C. Yuriy from Odessa,who until today remains in custody.
The tourist boat had 35 people onboard, from whom 28 were found dead after research operations.
Police Chief Pal added that ‘He just did not notice the Mermaid, simple as that. He never saw it before he hit it.‘
Concerning the captain’s charge, it’s up to the precise charges that will be determined by the prosecutor. In essence, the prosecutors would prepare and issue their charges after a mandatory 30-day waiting period, adding the captain would remain in custody to prevent him escaping.
