Danish Shipping announced that the statutory courses for seafarers, the so-called §16 work environment courses and courses in Danish maritime legislation, are now digitized.
At the same time, the duration of a combined course in the working environment and Danish maritime legislation is shortened from four to three days. This makes it cheaper for shipping companies and easier for seafarers to take the course, while saving time and effort.
The digitization was made on the basis of the Danish Maritime Authority’s new rules on the working environment, which entered into force in July 2017.
In the future, online tuition will take place in a virtual classroom for small teams of up to 6 participants. Both teachers and students can see and talk to each other throughout the course. In this way, there is the same opportunity to interact with teachers and students, but without having to travel to attend the courses.
This is expected to be beneficial for both shipping companies and seafarers, according to Anne Windfeldt Trolle, Director of Danske Shipping companies.
“We are pleased to be able to offer our courses online as the first maritime course provider. The seafarers will be able to log in from their homes through a PC or iPad, so do not leave the family during the home period or spend time on the courses on board. In addition, of course, it also helps the shipping companies, as there is no payment for hotel accommodation and transportation. It will be a win for all parties,” she explained.
The Danish Shipping Academy, which offers courses, will continue to hold courses with physical attendance, as long as there is demand for them, Danish Shipping further informed.
