Danish Maritime Authority discussed about the agreements made on PPR 6 and focused on the progress the IMO members made towards the Organization’s final preparations for the new global sulphur regulation. More importantly, the Authority highlighted that the participants agreed on a number of measures for consistent implementation and enforcement of the new rules.
Mainly, the new measures have now been forwarded to the IMO’s Marine Environment Protection Committee for completion in May this year.
The measures that will be finalized in 2019 include guidelines for sampling of fuel oil on board ships and guidelines for consistent implementation including the use of so-called Fuel Oil Non-Availability Reports from ships.

In addition, the above measures along with the prohibit of vessels transmitting fuel which contains up to 0.5% sulphur aspire to reassure that all parties in the shipping sector are prepared to be compliant with the 2020 rules that are ahead.
During PPR 6 the participants also finalized the methodology for assessing the socioeconomic effects of a possible ban on carriage and use of Heavy Fuel Oil as fuel in Arctic waters.
In light of this result, Member States will further discuss the impact assessment at the next sub-committee meeting in 2020.
