Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) is about to develop an alliance focused on the construction of eco-friendly and smart ships.
Specifically, the global research and development (R&D) alliance involves five ship quality assurance and risk management companies, four universities, and five research institutes.
The four universities are South Korea’s Seoul National University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Michigan of the US, and the University of Strathclyde of the UK.

The five-ship quality assurance and risk management companies are South Korea’s Korean Register of Shipping, American Bureau of Shipping, Lloyd’s Register of Shipping of Britain, Bureau Veritas of France, and Norway’s Det Norske Veritas.
The five research institutes in DSME’s list are South Korea’s KRISO, Italy’s CNR, Norway’s SINTEF Ocean, Sweden’s SSPA, and Germany’s HSVA.
Overall, the R&D consultative group will jointly develop technologies in the shipping industry’s environmental regulations, including those of autonomous ships, and core technologies in fluid mechanics.
